Before every show, Mood Spill invites the audience to join them in taking a deep breath. This communal practice of mindfulness has become a ritualistic moment of calm before the inevitable storm that comes with any Mood Spill performance.
Combining the tenderness of Big Thief with the sizzling on-stage dynamic of Fleetwood Mac, Mood Spill are quickly becoming one of Australia’s most exciting indie rock acts. Hailing from Melbourne’s inner north, the band presents audiences with an impressive display of multi-instrumentalist talent and refreshingly authentic songwriting.
Mood Spill’s five members – Tom Riccioni, Bailey Brown, Georgia-Grace Buckingham, Adrian Verna and Oli Morley-Sattler – share songwriting duties, all contributing to a catalogue of tracks that confidently teeter between radically tender and electrically high octane.
Their energy is infectious. Mood Spill play to every room with unbridled confidence, inviting the audience into their world – even if just for one hour. Though the band each have default positions on stage, they regularly swap instruments from track-to-track, cycling through guitars, synths, drums and even mandolins.
Riccioni leads the charge as the front man, with a stage presence that expertly cycles between vulnerability and chaos, though he regularly surrenders lead vocals to the other members. The rest of the band fill out backing vocals, including five-part harmonies on select tracks.
Noah Redfern from TheMusic.com.au praised Mood Spill’s approach as “true virtuosity” with plenty of on-stage charm. “Every time Mood Spill hit the stage, we look forward to the next switch-up.” Though technically impressive, the band’s captivating personalities prove equally compelling with audiences. A stray laugh, a funny look, a whispered joke – Mood Spill are the group of friends that everyone wants to be a part of.
“I think we’re honing on a bit of a theme of friendship here,” said Riccioni, playing to a sold-out crowd last June in Melbourne. That friendship is reflected in their lyrics. There are band member name drops, references to in-jokes, and enough titbits of ‘lore’ to keep audiences guessing – and jealous – of the band’s inner workings.
The results speak for themselves: Mood Spill’s headline shows have proved a hit across Victoria, with multiple sold out headline shows (including a sold-out night at Melbourne’s iconic Old Bar in Fitzroy, celebrating the release of the band’s debut single, Until You’re Gone) and successful festival appearances (including Wonder Mountain Music Festival, Winter Magic Festival in NSW and a main stage slot at Queenscliff Music Festival).
“Hello! Some big moments on this. It's a trip worth going on with Mood Spill.” Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J
